I have been interested in the War for many years and covered various aspects of the conflict during my teaching career, particularly to fourteen year olds and sixth form students. I also became interested through a study of my family history including a grandfather who was a tunneller in the Royal Engineers. I completed with distinction an M.A in West Midlands Historical Studies at what was then Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1983. Having retired in 2005 I took my interests further and became a battlefield guide for Galina of Chester and then Secretary of the Birmingham Branch of the Western Front Association. I also became addicted to the Great War Forum on the internet - a wonderful resource. I made my first tour of the Western Front in 2002 in the capable hands of Jon Cooksey.
